An MSExchangeIS event with error code 9518 0xfffffddc

Written by Xaus Xavier Nadal on May 13th, 2012

Good Morning.

The other day a client monitoring to detect the following error in your email system Exchange 2003, An MSExchangeIS event with error code 9518 0xfffffddc.

We found that all databases of a Storage Group had gone suddenly. (Normal in this type of errors, now I will explain why.) And attempting to start the database the following error appeared

Type: Error

Event ID: 9518

Source: MSExchangeIS

Error 0xfffffddc starting Storage Group / DC = com / DC = <domain> / CN = Configuration / CN = Services / CN = Microsoft Exchange / CN = <container> / CN = Administrative Groups / CN = First Administrative Group / CN = Servers / CN = <server> / CN = InformationStore / 2 CN = Storage Group on the Microsoft Exchange Information Store.

Storage Group - Initialization of Jet failed.

This occurs when the maximum number represented by the name of the transaction log for the particular storage group (ExxFFFF0.log) 1,048,560 2003 Exchange log in and (0x7FFFFFFF) log files 2,147,483,647 2007 Exchange is exceeded.

But when this happens ?: The transaction log files (transaction log) is a record of every transaction made by the database engine. All transactions are written to the log, then slowly written to the database.

Every time someone receives, sends, moves a mail or when a user moves exhange administrator of a database to another this log is growing and will stored on disk as files with a specific nomenclature Exx<Count>.log and each of these files in Exchange 2003 5,120 occupy KB (5 MB).

Therefore as long ago you disponéis installed and Exchange 2003 sure you have done almost 1 million moves, or already has passed or you will have little to you that error appears.

To detect this you can proactively monitor the LOGS folder of your Exchange to detect if the files you are generating 2003 Exchange (transaction log) are near ExxFFFF0.log as you can see in the following image:

MSExchangeIS 9518_1

But how to reset the Exchange transaction log?

We have a tool that besides doing many other things like doing a performance troubleshotting when there is a performance problem or mail flow troubleshooting or even to detect faults in the mail system is also able to read the display system events and detect whether there has been an error that causes this problem with databases off suddenly in recent days.

The program comes on the heels of Microsoft and is called Microsoft Exchange Troubleshooting Assistant v1.1 and you can download from the following link:

For example from making 2 hours -> 120 minutes.

Click on Retrieve event logs

ExchangeTroubleshooting6

Here is the error as I had counted.

Exceeded the Maximum Number of Transaction Log Files Available for this Storage Group.

Click on the error

ExchangeTroubleshooting7

Now it is best to click on Tell me more about this issue and how to resolve it.

After having collected enough information to understand that this process will not break anything click on:

Use Database Recovery Management related task to verify and resolve This Issue that Database Recovery Management to transfer just the affected storage group as a parameter.

We also have the option to close this window and go to start Microsoft Exchange Troubleshooting Assistant and click on Database Recovery Management

ExchangeTroubleshooting8

To resolve these errors databases must be offBut could be a case of wanting to do this action in a proactive and error that we would appear if the databases are torn looks like the following:

ExchangeTroubleshooting9

If the databases are off because of the error then you will see the following screen:

ExchangeTroubleshooting10

click on Reset log generation number

ExchangeTroubleshooting11

Select the Storage Group concerned or that we will perform scheduled maintenance (Remember, databases off).

Click on Browse to define a path where there is space available to move the log files temporarily. (This is a very important point because if we do not have space on the backup location are not going to make the repair).

Click on Next.

ExchangeTroubleshooting12

In the picture above 2 logs appear only because we eliminated to expedite resolution action and to make the paper in less time but really we would see all the logs.

At the end of this whole procedure the databases can be mounted normally and the transaction log starts counting from 0 as you see in the following image.

ExchangeTroubleshooting13

So much for the resolution of the problem, I hope you have been helpful and that you have given another reason to keep reading the blog ..

Until next time.
