As virtualize ESXi a host 5

Written by jl on January 14th, 2013

Hello everyone

In this article we will see how 5 ESXi virtualize a host within a physical ESXi host, which is known as nested ESXi. This can come in handy when riding a test environment or a lab where we do not have the necessary hardware. In our case, for example, we only had a physical server with 20GB of RAM, hard disk 144GB and two dual core Intel processors with which we could not mount a vSphere cluster. In the article we focus on the 5 version, because the hardware we have is only compatible for this version, but I will discuss what to do for the 5.1 version is the latest.

1.- First we have to do is perform a basic installation of ESXi Host 5 on the physical server. In this article we will not explain step by step how to do, if you need help you can contact us.

2.- Once installed the ESXi server, install the vCenter server 5 our case we will do with the virtual appliance option since the 5 version offers WMware. Xavi wrote the following articles and the installation and configuration of the appliance in 5.1 version and the process is almost the same as the installation and configuration of the 5 version.

http://www.megacrack.es/2012/11/14/configurar-vcenter-server-5-1-en-modo-appliance/

3.- Once these two steps we have our basic infrastructure with an ESXi server and vCenter Server Appliance

25_1

4.- The next step is to configure the virtual switch promiscuous mode where we will connect the virtual ESXi server. To do this we go to the properties of the vSwitch

25_2

Select edit, and change the security tab Promiscuous Mode option to accept.

25_3

5.- Then we will have to modify a physical ESXi server option to house the virtual host and will allow us to run virtual machines 64 bits. For that we open an ssh session against the ESXi host and add in the file / etc / vmware / config linevhv.allow = "TRUE"

25_4

In version 5.1 the value we have to add in the file is vhv.enable = "TRUE" "

6.- The next step is to create a virtual machine that will be the ESXi Host.

25_5

We give the name and the datacenter where we will create

25_6

Select the datastore, in this case to have a united disk is single

25_7

Select the version of the virtual machine

25_8

Select the version of the operating system of the virtual machine. If we look for in the drop-down option 5.0 see that ESXi does not appear, so select as Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 (64-bit), and later will edit this option and it appears us the right choice. N the 5.1 version this is already solved and the option appears ESXi operating system 5.1

25_9

We set the number of CPUs, which as a minimum requirement of an ESXi server must be 2 cores.

25_10

We configure memory whose minimum requirement is 2GB

25_11

We set the number and type of network cards

25_12

Select the SCSI controller

25_13

We create the virtual disk, which in our case and the little space we have we are going to create formatted Thin

25_14

25_15

Configure advanced options

25_16

Once the virtual machine created will go to the properties of the virtual machine, and the Options tab, under General Options modify the value of the operating system and select VMware ESXi 5.x

25_17

In Advanced, CPU / MMU Virtualization select the option Use Intel VT-x / AMD-V for virtualization and instruction set EPT / AMD RVI for MMU virtualization

25_18

7.- once we have created the virtual machine proceed to install the virtual ESXi Host to which to connect the virtual machine cd we have generated and we started from the cd

25_23

And we guide them through the steps to install the esxi like physical

25_24

8.- Once installed, we go to vCenter if we can add to the system and work with normally. In addition we have a shared storage if we can create a cluster and get much more out.

25_26

Where

the 192.168.1.10 server is the physical server

the 192.168.1.79 ESXi server is the virtual server

esx579 is the virtual machine on which we have installed the virtual esxi

I hope you find it useful

regards
