Useful applications for VMware environments

Posted by Xaus Xavier Nadal 12th on May 2013

Today we are going to show several useful applications for VMware, these apps are free and do not require much knowledge to use.

Some of them are quite powerful and as you will see are continuing to substitute existing VMware environments in applications, but in some cases improved by the community. It's amazing what programmers can do with a good base of knowledge and with your imagination.

UBERAlign, IOMETER, and ESXI-customizer

UBERAlign

And finally, the best of 3, UBERAlign is a Windows application by or through an appliance (OVA) allows us to align Vmware vmdk disks of virtual machines with disk array which is mounted and the system vmfs windows for example.

2 consists of parts, the client and the virtual machine..

In the case of creating vmdk disks using the Virtual Center problem in the vmdk not exist, but instead of mounting windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 assemble an older operating system the vmfs system will not be properly aligned and have the possibility of increasing the disk performance if we use this tool.

They say that we can expect to earn between 9 13% and performance in virtual infrastructure.

With UBERAlign we can first diagnose whether we have a failure of alignment and then resolve it if you think fit.

But this tool goes further, also achieved if we needed reclaim space that we are not using in virtual machines and after transforming discs to thin to have this space on LUN to accommodate more machines, you can see in the following video .

http://vimeo.com/31551795

Until you takes a snapshot of the virtual machine if there is a problem in the process.

If you want to see why it is important to explain the alignment you perfectly in the following link: http://www.blueshiftblog.com/?p=300

You can see more advanced information on the following link http://nickapedia.com/2011/11/07/for-advanced-users-uberalign-api-cli-powershell/

IOMETER

The first application we show is Iometer which you can download from the following link: http://www.iometer.org/doc/downloads.htmlThis application is open source and is not only useful for VMware environments, but for environments where we have a SAN, NAS, iSCSI, or even local disks back to store our data, computers or servers, this app serves as you said the word to measure disk IOPs we want, but we can also see the response times and MBs per second and other data.

When running the application will allow us to select the disks we want or even access to network drives by 5 top menu icon.

Upgrade to vSphere vSphere 4.1 5 - V

Posted by jl on March 21 2013st

Hello everyone

Next step in the process of upgrading to vSphere 4.1 5 and in this case we will try to update the ESX servers. In the environment we 3 4.1 ESX servers and in this case the update not only the updated version 5 but we will have ESX to ESXi version is the only supported from the 5 version.

For this process we will use the update manager, but comment if someone is in the case, if the ESX servers are migrated from previous to 4 versions, the upgrade can not be done with the update manager and do it from the installation cd. We have made this process as a test old server and the update is done without any problem.

Updating ESX hosts

In the next image we can see the vCenter version of ESX that we will update it 4.1 2 update Megacrack read »

As virtualize ESXi a host 5

Posted by jl on January 14th 2013

Hello everyone

In this article we will see how 5 ESXi virtualize a host within a physical ESXi host, which is known as nested ESXi. This can come in handy when riding a test environment or a lab where we do not have the necessary hardware. In our case, for example, we only had a physical server with 20GB of RAM, hard disk 144GB and two dual core Intel processors with which we could not mount a vSphere cluster. In the article we focus on the 5 version, because the hardware we have is only compatible for this version, but I will discuss what to do for the 5.1 version is the latest.

1.- First we have to do is perform a basic installation of ESXi Host 5 on the physical server. In this article we will not explain step by step how to do, if you need help you can contact us.

2.- Once installed the ESXi server, install the vCenter server 5 our case we will do with the virtual appliance option since the 5 version offers WMware. Xavi wrote the following articles and the installation and configuration of the appliance in 5.1 version and the process is almost the same as the installation and configuration of the 5 version.

3.- Once these two steps we have our basic infrastructure with an ESXi server and vCenter Server Appliance Megacrack read »

As set Vmotion in VMware ESXi without fear

Posted by Xaus Xavier Nadal on October 22nd 2012

vMotionvSphere5Vmotion VMware is a technology that enables the migration of virtual machines from one ESXi host to another host without losing service.

What we will show in this article is how to configure Vmotion in 2 ESXi hosts connected together by a dedicated network cable.

2 really recommend using network cables since in vSphere 5 you can use multiple network connections to load the VMkernel swing between the 2 cards and much reduced time migration of a virtual machine from one host to the other. (Really though migration between hosts is very fast, we will see the end of the article when you move a hot machine).

requirements:

Having a Virtual Center.

2 have physical servers with ESXi installed.

Having a Gigabit network cable to connect from one server to another directly.

How to install VMware ESXi 5.0 as remote SSH enabled.

Posted by Xaus Xavier Nadal 28th on September 2011

Good,

Today we show how to install VMware ESXi 5.0 (I'm going to do on a vmware workstation 8.0 from which it is possible to install it without problems and without having to make any special configuration, this facility is called nested vmware) but the ISO from the link above VMware ESXi 5.0 is fully installable on a physical server, which is where it should be if this were not a testing environment.

Also explain how Enable Remote SSH Shell at end of article.

Above all we must check that the machine we are going to install is compatible with this version of OS.

You can read the following article to learn how.

http://www.megacrack.es/2010/02/25/vmware-compatibility-guide/

We start the machine with the botable CD or USB with the stored image and directly see the following screen will disappear in a 8 seconds unless you press any key. (I like to always press the cursor keys are not accepted as such if you press enter or space could be clicking on an option) ... well let the verbiage and the task.

VMware ESXi 5.0_1

This version we're installing is the last known date 08 / 24 / 11 so if you have a newer version installed and want to make a little article for the blog you know that you can leave a comment on this article or send an email to following address autores@megacrack.es
