VirtualCenter Server Install on Windows 5 64 bits

Written by Xaus Xavier Nadal on July 11th, 2012

Today we will show you how to install VirtualCenter Server 5 a very basic way.

First of all you will have to know that the operating system 64 bits must be. 5 Virtual Center can not be installed in a 32 bit operating system.

These operating systems are supported:

2003 Microsoft Windows Server Standard, Enterprise or Datacenter SP2 64bit
2003 Microsoft Windows Server Standard, Enterprise or Datacenter R2 SP2 64bit
2008 Microsoft Windows Server Standard, Enterprise or Datacenter SP2 64bit
2008 Microsoft Windows Server Standard, Enterprise or Datacenter R2 SP2 64bit

General prerequisites

Before installing vCenter Server, ensure the following:

  • Verify that you have the installation DVD or downloaded installer vCenter Server. For more information, see Download the vCenter Server Installer in the guide ESX and vCenter Server Installation Guide.
  • Verify that the necessary ports are open. For more information, see Required Ports for vCenter Server (2005105).
  • Verify that your database meets the relevant requirements. For more information, see vCenter Server Database Patch and Configuration Requirements and Preparing vCenter Server Databases in the guide ESX and vCenter Server Installation Guide.
  • Gather the information that the server installation wizard vCenter Server requires. For more information, see Required Information for Installing vCenter Server in the guide ESX and vCenter Server Installation Guide.
  • Verify that the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of the system where you are installing vCenter Server is resolvable. To verify that the name can be resolved, type: nslookup <vCenter_Server_fqdn> in a command line window. If the full name (FQDN) can be solved, the nslookup command returns the IP address and hostname of the domain controller.
  • Check for Network Address Translation (NAT) between the vCenter Server system and servers will manage.
  • Verify that the computer name has no more than 15 characters.
  • Verify that the DNS name of the machine matches the actual computer name.
  • Make sure the system where you are installing vCenter Server is not a domain controller Active Directory. Installing vCenter Server on a domain controller is not supported.
  • In each system that is running vCenter Server, make sure that the domain user account has these permissions:
    • It belongs to the Administrators group
    • Act as part of operating system
    • Log on as a service
  • Consider whether the vCenter server instance will be independent (standalone) or belong to a group linked (Linked Mode group). For more information, see Creating vCenter Server Linked Mode Groups in the guideESX and vCenter Server Installation Guide.

Additionally, consider the following points:

  • Unless you plan to install the SQL Server package included 2008 R2 Express, create a database for vCenter Server.
  • If the system used for the installation of vCenter Server belongs to a workgroup (workgroup) instead of belonging to a domain, not all functionality will be available for vCenter Server. If assigned to a workgroup, the vCenter Server system is not able to discover all domains and systems available on the network when using certain functions. To determine whether the system belongs to a workgroup or a domain, right-click on My Computer.
  • During installation, check the connection between the machine and the domain controller is running.
  • The Network Service (NETWORK SERVICE) account is required to be in the folder in which vCenter Server is installed and the registry key HKLM. If you are not sure about this, contact your system administrator.
  • Install vCenter Server, like any network server, on a machine with a fixed IP address and DNS name known, so that customers can reliably access the service. Assign a static IP address and hostname for the Windows server where you reside vCenter Server system. This IP address must have a valid (internal) record in the Domain Name System (DNS). Make sure the administration interface ESXi has a valid DNS resolution from vCenter Server and from all vSphere customers. Ensure that the vCenter Server has a valid DNS resolution from all ESXi hosts and from all vSphere customers. If you use DHCP instead of a static IP address for vCenter Server, make sure the computer name is updated vCenter Server in the domain name service (DNS).
Ping the computer name to test this connection. For example, if the computer name is, run this command in a command window Windows system:
If you can successfully ping the computer name, then the name is updated in DNS.
Minimum hardware requirements

Processors Intel or AMD x86 with two or more cores (cores) logic, each with a speed of at least 2GHz. The Intel Itanium (IA64) processor is not supported. Processor requirements might be higher if the database runs on the same machine.

4 GB of RAM. RAM requirements can be larger if your database is running on the same machine. The web service management, VMware VirtualCenter Management WebServices, MB 512 requires additional memory to 4.4GB. The maximum JVM memory Webservices can be specified during installation depending on the size of the inventory.

Drive Capacity

4 GB. The disk requirements may be higher if the database server is running vCenter Server in the same máquina.En 5.0 vCenter Server, the default size for log records vCenter Server is 450 MB, which is higher than in vCenter Server 4 . x Make sure the space allocated to the folder log records is sufficient to support this increase.

Disk requirements for Microsoft SQL Server Express 2008 R2

Until 2GB of free disk space to unpack the installation file. Approximately 1,5 GB of these files are deleted after installation is complete.

Network Connection

1 Gb connection recommended.

We leave this option checked if you have more than VirtualCenter 2000 virutales machines, for when the system should start falling and all machines can define resource pools and not saturate the network ports (ephemeral ports)

So far the 5 VirtualCenter installation.
